This has to be one of my most favourite pieces that I've had the opportunity to do as a commission for a close friend who is currently on a very significant cultural journey
This piece was carved to represent New Zealand's only native land mammal the pekapeka (bat). Pekapeka motifs are believed to symbolise spiritual protection and guardianship and with two outward-facing heads connected through one body, the symmetry of this piece creates a harmonious sense of balance and stability. Beautiful light coloured stone sets this piece apart from so many of the standard dark greens making it absolutely unique and the inlaid eyes are crafted from paua shell.
